Youth Programs as Diversion

Assigning youth programs at JHBs is restorative and evidence-based diversion. Youth programs can provide youth at risk of system involvement with opportunities to learn, grow, and connect with their community. Programs can teach youth structure, give them positive role models, help them explore their interests and show them a better future. By promoting protective factors in a youth’s life, the less likely they are to re-offend or recidivate and the more likely they are to meet rehabilitation goals. This is supported by research as studies have shown that youth programs in arts, sports, music, and crafts have a significant impact on reducing law breaking behaviors among youth including violent offenses.

Project RESPECT is a week-long summer camp hosted annually by RICJ that empowers youth to become leaders in social change through interactive workshops and team building activities.

One youth who came to Project RESPECT through the JHB process expressed the impact the experience had on her. On the first day of camp, she was so shy that she hid her face with her hair. As the week progressed, she found a sense of belonging and learned to see the world differently. She said, "Everybody was amazing to me, I felt like I belonged. Being a part of a camp, and not just any camp, but this one, has made me feel like I belong." She showed her face and smiled. She was invited back to camp as a counselor-in-training for the next year.

This past June, youth at camp explored the JHB process by discussing disparities in juvenile justice, practicing restorative justice techniques, conducting mock hearings, and developing creative assignments. Youth left with a greater appreciation of JHBs and many expressed wanting to join their local JHB in the future!

RICJ has various other programs for youth in Rhode Island interested in social justice such as afterschool, mentorship, and summer employment. These programs are for youth to serve their community and practice leadership skills in a supportive environment that reinforces values such as justice and respect for others. RICJ can also help facilitate referrals to programs for JHB youth through our network and partnerships with organizations such as Mentor RI and the Black Pilots Association of RI as well as our knowledgeable staff and dedicated JHB case manager.
